Waverly High School hosted the Eastern Midland Conference Choir concert on Nov. 11.
The schools attending were Norris, Gretna, Plattsmouth, Elkhorn, Elkhorn South, Blair, Bennington and Nebraska City.
The concert was conducted by Paul H. Gulsvig and accompanist Wanda Mandigo.
Gulsvig dedicated his life and much of his time to expand others knowledge of music. He has a very strong background in music and involves himself in many different choirs from all over the United States.
Gulsvig spends his time teaching high schoolers more than just scales and technique.
“In 1992, I stopped teaching music, and started teaching life,” Gulsvig said.
Each school performed choice song and the concert ended with a mass chorus of all schools. The songs ranged in styles from contemporary pop to classical, from Gospel to traditional.
Waverly’s individual piece was dedicated to vocal director Rachel Kornfeld’s father who passed away this February.
This was something that the chorus decided all together.
“It was very emotional for me to do that piece with my kids, it has great meaning,” Kornfeld said.
The conference schools getting together to make music and perform together allows students a chance who don’t participate in sports to meet people from other schools.
“[EMC Choir is] important because it gives individuals insight on how others view music but also get to know them,” senior choir member Eric Swierczek said.
