Students Give Back to Community
Waverly High School’s Student Council is hosting this year’s Community Care Drive. Each morning this week, council members have been stationed in the high school library collecting non-perishable items, as well as various toiletries. Every school within the district is collecting, too.
On Tuesday, the counselors and Student Council are donating the collected food and other various items to the Waverly and Eagle churches for their food pantries.
“We wanted to keep it [the donations] all local so that we could make an impact locally,” junior and Student Council Secretary Jack Kasra said.
Student Council didn’t set a goal for how much food they wanted to collect, instead they want to focus more on receiving donations of usable items.
Across the district, schools have set up the collections differently. At the high school, students can drop off items in the library before school. Student Council leaders at Waverly Middle School and Waverly Intermediate school are helping collect items, too.
With the upcoming holiday season, the Community Care Drive targets families who have limited funding for holiday dinners, daily necessities, and gifts.
“Sometimes that’s humbling and hard for some families,” counselor Jason Boitnott said. “But if they know where it is and really there is only one person there, it’s a great way for them to get the things that they need.”
The Community Care Drive collected a total of 404 items last year.
