Girls Basketball Season Starts Up

The anticipation is building for the start of girl’s basketball for Waverly High School.
With all the early morning practices, conditioning and after school practices, the girls are itching to get on the court.
With the varsity team, the feelings are the same as last year. The spirits are high and the team is looking forward to making their hard work pay off.
Head coach Anthony Harms believe the Lady Vikes have a certain advantage this year.
“We have speed. I feel like we will get better as the season will go on,” Harms said.
Of course, some players come and go throughout their high school career. One problem with the team this year is that they don’t have a lot of varsity returners. Since there were three seniors last year, there are only two returning players that start. Seniors Olivia Boender and Nicki Larsen are the only two starting returners.
The junior varsity team has high expectations for this year.
“Last year we were a young team,” JV coach Joel Fritz said. “We are still going to play a lot of sophomores, but we will be more experienced this year.”
The girls that play on the JV team have a positive outlook while they head into the new season.
With a strong season last year, the coaches and the players seem to have a good outlook on what is to come.
“I think we will have a good season. We won a lot of games last year. With that experience, I think we’ll go a long way,” Fritz said.
The girls JV and varsity basketball teams took action on Dec. 2 in an exhibition match against Wahoo and came out with a win for both teams. Their first legitimate game will be Dec. 5 when they attack Waverly’s rival, Pius, on Waverly’s home court.
