Waverly joined peers from across the state were united at UNL for a day of learning economics with lectures, presentation and games at the annual UNL Econ Day on Nov. 20.
The students were greeted by UNL administration and then were split into two groups. One group started with a lecture from Dr. Sam Allgood on the fiscal cliff and debt ceiling. The other group went to Jamie Wagner--a UNL student working to receive a Ph.D. in economics-- to listen to a lecture on Healthcare Economics(including Obamacare).
After each half-hour session, there was a break and right back into the second set of sessions. These sessions consisted of a simulation with Jennifer Davidson, director of programs and community development for the Nebraska council on Economic education.
“The students took part in a market simulation by selling and buying crude oil,” senior Mari Wheeler said.
The second part of the session was “The Econ Major and the Scoop on Campus Life”.
“Two students in the CBA were with us to answer any questions regarding college, such as study time, scheduling, activities, Greek life, switching majors, [and the likes],” Wheeler said.
Finally the students wrapped up their visit with a campus tour. The tour was mainly focused on the College of Business to be finished in 2016.
“Turn on your TV. Economics is there even in COD. Go shopping for Christmas presents [and] econ is there,” teacher Trent Goldsmith said.
Goldsmith believed that this day was a success.
“I think it made an impact. I don't know if it will "shift opinions" on what their majors will be, but it I did hear students talk about considering a business option or an econ minor, etc that were not before,” Goldsmith said.
