Waverly Stomps Wahoo

The first game of any sport is always the most nerve-racking.

The Waverly-Wahoo boys exhibition game last week was no different. With the final buzzer the Warriors were trailing the Vikings 65-47

The first quarter started with the top six to seven guys from each team switching out. Wahoo got off to an early lead ranging from two to ten points. The points given were due to small mistakes from both sides of the court such as not boxing out and failing to retrieve rebounds. These small errors were not as numerous after that.

The second quarter was set for the sixth seat and lower, which was agreed on by both teams so that all team members could participate. During the quarter Waverly pulled ahead through a hard-fought eight minutes.

“I thought we played pretty well overall, but the first quarter wasn't our best. During the second quarter, our eighth thru fourteenth players really stepped up our press and made it very difficult for Wahoo to get the ball past half-court,” head coach Mark Watton said.

Throughout the second half, the teams fought hard for victory. In the end Waverly celebrated the win with cheers and an upbeat attitude on the bus ride home.

“I am guessing we will have many close, hard-fought games. How we play during the fourth quarter will make a huge difference in our win-loss record, but I think these guys will battle each and every night, so that will be fun to watch,” Watton said.

The next game for the Vikings will be at home tonight.
