Band Boosters Barely Break Even With Waffle Man

The Waffle Man served another batch of breakfast food for the Waverly Band Boosters on Friday, Dec. 6.
For the event, students and community members paid $5 for unlimited waffles, sausage and beverage of choice.
There were multiple Band Boosters behind scenes, as well as a few out cleaning up, collecting money and serving. There was also a line of waffle irons, so many that 20 waffles could be made every four minutes.
That’s exactly the kind of numbers needed to produce enough breakfast food for the expected crowd that was supposed to come between 4:30 and 7:30 that evening during the doubleheader basketball game against Elkhorn, as many spectators were anticipated to gorge themselves.
One of the diners, senior Bailie Saathoff, came to the game for a serving of waffles, pep band and, of course, some basketball.
“I ate enough waffles for three people,” Saathoff said.
After a plate was paid for, a person could go up and reload his or her plate as many times as he or she wanted. Overindulging was easy for most people to do since the waffles were delicious, fluffy and seemingly unlimited. The several toppings for the waffles (including whipped cream, maple syrup and blueberry syrup) were delectable and sugary, which made the food all the more tempting.
Yet the temptation got the better of only a few spectators.
“We barely broke even,” Band Booster president Terri Sander said. “Only 300 people came this year compared to the 600 people last year.”
Although it was a fun activity the community could enjoy, more guests were needed to make any money for the Pride of the Vikes marching and concert band.
