The Waverly Vikings’ boys basketball team won a home game against Platteview with a final score of 56-55 on Tuesday with a last-second shot from senior Dylan Janecek.
Right off the bat, the Vikes were down 10-2 to the Trojans and the gap wasn’t getting much smaller. The deficit remained between five and ten points for the majority of the match, until the last few seconds.
With 22 seconds left on the clock, Waverly was down by four points. Junior Ryan Searle inbounded the ball to Janecek with a cross-court lob, setting up a layup.
Platteview attempted the same play on the Vikings, but the ball didn’t connect quickly enough and was bobbled around between both teams. With barely a second to spare, Janecek picked up the basketball and hurled a shot from well behind the three-point line, sinking it and ensuring a Waverly victory.
“It was all a blur. Everything happened so fast and it was so loud,” Janecek said. “People went crazy, people were jumping up and down, coach was screaming-- it was crazy.”
That exhilarating win changed Waverly’s win-loss record to 4-4, and gained a whole lot of excitement for the team. The Vikings will play a home game against Norris tonight at 7:30.
