The Weather Channel Not On DirecTV

The Weather Channel and DirecTV are beefing, and the debate kept the program off of 20 million TV screens starting today.
The broadcasting service wasn’t able to work out a new deal with them in time for the deadline on Monday at midnight. Thus, many homes using DirecTV’s service won’t receive their weather forecasts via television for what could be anywhere from days to weeks.
Unhappiness isn’t unusual between DirecTV and the Weather Channel, and it’s largely focused on the content displayed on the channel. Reality TV is a mainstay, though many would prefer a constant stream of actual weather-related information.
The real question may be whether or not the Weather Channel will continue to be relevant much longer. With smart phones in the pocket of countless people, the local forecast is in someone’s hands seconds after it is wondered about.
Rain and snow and sleet are on personal little screens weeks before they actually happen, which leaves the Weather Channel’s future on slick ground.
