The Waverly Dance Team has downsized over the past three years. Not in size but in height.
The dance team, for the third year, is organizing a dance clinic for girls from kindergarten through fifth grade. The little girls will perform a dance number on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3:45 during halftime of the varsity girl’s game at the Waverly high school.
Little girls’ in elementary school dream of being in high school with the older girls. This clinic gives them a chance to do that, even if it’s just for an afternoon.
Due to the strong relationship to the girls on the dance team, it won’t be a difficult task to get the little girls to feel special.
“It is a way for younger kids in the district to experience an event at the high school and have a chance to be involved,” dance coach Jamie Frame said.
The dance team puts together and gets involved in other activities in the community beside the Jr. Dance Clinic. The dance team is very much a part of school spirit and dance at all boys and girls home varsity games. They also dance at the homecoming football games and the booster bash. In addition, they put together something called “Diva For A Day” for little girls.
“It [Diva For A Day] is when we have elementary students come and we dress them up, do their make-up, nails and do a fashion show for parents,” junior Skylar Asher said.
The 40-50 elementary students who participate in the clinic each year may dance for fun, because it’s their hobby or because they want to pursue dance as a career. Being on the dance team as a high schooler is a way to fulfill their goals.
Regardless of the reasons, the clinic will benefits the students.
“This is a way to expose younger dancers to the high school dance team experience and see if it is something they might be interested in,” Frame said.
The Waverly dance team not only supports the teams that represent the school, but also the dreams of the girls who look up to them as role models.
