Poet Sierra DeMulder Slams Waverly

Sierra DeMulder performed for the Waverly Slam Poets team and other members of the high school on Jan 10.
DeMulder is a professional slam poet who makes a living from performing her poems. Despite DeMulders world class skills, shes only been performing for a few years.n
“I started writing when I was in highschool but I learned what slam was when I was a freshman in college,”DeMulder said.
The Nebraska Writers Council offers schools a chance to have professional poets come in and perform, and Slam Poetry’s sponse Kelly Bielenberg took advantages it.
“I submitted specifically for her to come,” Bielenberg said. “I knew she was going to be in Nebraska, but we just got lucky that it worked into her schedule to be able to come here during the time frame I requested.”
DeMulder is very popular and can be an inspiration to to slam poets everywhere.
“I was hoping that not only would slam poetry team members get a chance to see someone who’s competed at the national level and be able to use her as an example for their own poetry as well as exposing kids that aren’t on the slam poetry team to what slam poetry is by someone who does it for their living,” Bielenberg
The performance went over well with not only slam members but non-team members as well. At the end there were high spirits and poem ideas all around.
“In the slam poetry community she is really big and she recited a poem I requested,” student Chloe Brinson.
