Academy Award Nominations Present Themselves
On March 2, the 86th annual Academy Awards (better known as the Oscars) will take place with host Ellen DeGeneres. The nominations were announced on Thursday, January 16. The usual suspects, along with some newcomers, round off the lists.
“American Hustle”, “Captain Phillips”, “Dallas Buyers Club”, “Gravity”, “Her”, “Nebraska”, “Philomena”, “12 Years A Slave”, and “The Wolf of Wall Street” were the choices of the academy for best picture. My Prediction: “12 Years A Slave”. This movie has garnered extremely positive reviews.
For best actor, Christian Bale (American Hustle), Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) topped the list. My prediction: Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years A Slave”.
For best actress, Amy Adams (American Hustle), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena), and Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) made the cut. My prediction: Amy Adams, “American Hustle”. Amy Adams, in my opinion, is an amazing actress.
For best supporting actor, Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street), and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club). My prediction: Barkhad Abdi, “Captain Phillips”. I saw this movie, and I must say that Abdi was a perfect fit for his role.
Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle), Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years A Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), and June Squibb (Nebraska) were the academy’s picks for best supporting actress. My prediction: Jennifer Lawrence, “American Hustle”. Lawrence has the skill to beautifully portray any character she is cast as.
And finally, for best director, David O. Russell (American Hustle), Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave), and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street). My prediction: Steve McQueen, “12 Years A Slave”.
As for my predictions, I feel like “12 Years A Slave” will win big. I’ve never seen it, but judging from the whopping nine nominations the film has, it will succeed in most, if not all, of the categories it’s nominated for.
But, who knows, maybe “American Hustle” will win big too. It’s just a matter of the voter’s preference. I am hoping ,however, that Jennifer Lawrence wins her Oscar for “American Hustle”. Why? My reason is simple. She’s basically the Beyonce of the film industry.
Also, this might sound horrible, but Leonardo DiCaprio shouldn't win an Oscar.
Why? Everyone likes making "Leonardo can't win anything" jokes.
