Waverly High Lacks MLK Celebration

Jan. 20 is the day that America looks back in remembrance of the persistent drive Martin Luther King Jr. once had.
In memory, many schools and businesses take the day off to commemorate the incredible influence MLK had and why America is no longer segregated.
However, District 145 does not take the day off and continues with a regular day of school. Many people agree that there shouldn’t be school Jan. 20 because it is a big day for our entire nation.
“I think it’s a very important day to remember a very important man,” sophomore Karoline Finken said. “Therefore, I think we should have the day off because it’s a day to remember all of the amazing things he did for our country.”
Although MLK is a day most people take off, there is a good reason behind why Waverly resumes a regular day. Many students and parents don’t fully understand why the district is one of the few districts that continues on with a normal day.
Despite the many people that don’t agree with having school, staying in school gives students more education on the history of MLK and why there is a day set aside just for him.
“I believe it is more appropriate to have school and learn about his legacy in school and to get a better education about Martin Luther King Jr.,” Superintendent Bill Heimann said.
Many students will get the opportunity to fully understand the history on why Martin Luther King Jr. had such a huge impact on our America’s history.
With District 145 still in session, hopefully many students will accept they still have school, and fully interpret why it’s such an important day for our nation.
