Waverly High School freshmen were honored for raising $750 out of the school’s total of $1,500 to a cause that is near and dear to the WHS family.
For a whole week, students at Waverly High School scurried around looking through purses, digging through bags and searching in all corners for any loose change. Freshmen went the extra mile in doing all that and more. Overall, the school raised $1,519.72.
This year, all proceeds went towards the medical bills of the school’s former secretary, Kim Kleinbeck, who is currently battling cancer.
“I was never able to see her working within the high school, but I am tied to the family and know some of the struggles they’re facing, so there’s no better person within our community we could’ve given the money to,” freshman student council member Hunter Radenslaben said.
Kleinbeck working at the school for 22 years is one of the many reasons the council chose to donate the money to her rather than other causes.
“It may not seem like hard work, but she dealt with a lot in one day. When cancer struck, we couldn’t have thought of a better cause to put the money toward,” counselor Jason Boitnott said.
Early Thursday morning, all freshmen were released into the gym to enjoy donuts and juice for their efforts in the penny wars. Boitnott gave a congratulatory speech to the class and thanked them for all their work.
