Seahawk Squawk Or Eastern Insurrection?

Aelyn Thompson

CNN, Fox News and MSNBC are neglecting their duties as news broadcasting corporations.

In Eastern Europe, Ukraine is in the midst of a revolution. Their leader backed out of a pact with the European Union that was supported by well over half of the Ukrainian population. On Thursday, Jan. 23, tides changed when protesters agreed to a truce with police within the Kiev streets. The state of the revolt is ever evolving.

American citizens are concerned, as are most when innocents are standing up for what they believe in.

However, it seems as if news broadcasters are more concerned with the squawking coming from Seattle Seahawks cornerback Roger Sherman, or a DUI and grinning mugshot from pop singer Justin Bieber.

Even though football and pop culture are big priorities within many American homes, there is no reason that news corporations need to put an adrenaline-fueled interview or rich playboys over a potential government coup.

Many Waverlites have connections to or are immigrants from Eastern Europe, whose family members could be in the Ukraine, but the news on this region is hard to find. I had to search the news sites and flip through world sections in the Lincoln Journal Star to find something remotely relevant to the happenings on the other side of the world.

Roger Sherman may have the public’s attention with a strongly-worded comment about his athletic ability, but let’s not overlook the fact that there are civilians and human rights activists dying in Ukraine.

Let’s get our priorities straight, news teams. Independence and choice is being fought for around the world, by families of the hosts of Independence Day parties around the country.
