The Olympic games are a series of athletic events that groups of athletes take part in; every country joins the hype.
However, controversy is added into the mix this year. Countries are beginning to bring political issues into the games, adding security issues into the upcoming winter games. Not only might this cause more pressure on the athletes, but also the coaches and the officials who make the games possible.
Arguments involving gay athletes have risen, which shouldn’t serve as an issue with any country. An athlete’s sexuality doesn’t change the his or her performance, and doesn’t affect others’ abilities to compete. So why the issues? Russian president Vladimir Putin says it’s the kids; he doesn’t want them to have their eyes and ears filled with anything involving gay equality.
The U.S. is concerned with the safety of the games and where they’re located this year, preparing warships and transport aircraft to be ready in case any evacuations are necessary during the games.
This year at the games, safety isn’t guaranteed for any one person and many are stating that they will not attend the games due to the amount of risk of a terrorist attack.
Athletes shouldn’t go to compete in their top sports with the fear of ending up in a dangerous situation. Families of the athletes are probably beyond worried about their loved ones and feel threatened attending the games. So many precautions and money is getting put toward the attempted protection at the games, and those are situations that need solved before putting athletes into those positions.
