Math teacher Cody Gregory was announced this week as the new cross country coach 2014-2015 year.
For 30 years, art teacher Ken Adkisson coached the cross country team and had great success with the teams. He has pushed some runners to make it to state and has seen some make it further into the collegiate level.
Having a strong team physically and mentally is an important factor in competing in events. The devotion from the coach is valued by runners and parents.
Since Gregory attended and competed at Waverly High, he has a strong feel of the program.
“I know he has the passion to teach the kids and he cares about the kids a lot,” Adkisson said.
The runner’s dedication and success hopefully does not change with a new coach. Participants at Waverly are always up for a challenge. A new and lively coach can do that.
“I’m trying to continue the success of the boy’s team and increase the success of the girl’s team,” Gregory said.
For many runners, nothing else matters but the race. The only way they can think about the race alone is with a good foundation, which Gregory is hoping to instill.
