Many know the application Flappy Bird as an addicting game that leads to frustration, stress, excitement and devotion. The fans of Flappy Bird may feel like their wings are clipped off due to the discontinuation of the app. The creator of this addicting game, Dong Nguyen, deleted it from the iPhone and Android app store over the weekend for undisclosed reasons. One rumor is that the graphics are similar to Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros and the company that established that could have sent out a cease and desist order. The developer earned up to $50,000 a day in advertisements so money was not an issue.
“The reason why it was deleted was probably because it was too addicting and caused a lot of stress for the player,” junior Emily Knouse said.
After the game was free for so long, it is now only on certain devices, mostly iPhone 5s. If a player gets mad at the game they will delete it but little do they know it will be gone forever. Trying to redownload the app will be unsuccessful. Addicts to this popular app have bided up to $5 million on a California auction website on Ebay just to have the game on their phone. Although the game is hated by many, it is played nationwide by gamers.
“The game is overrated but popularly played at the same time since it’s very addictive,” senior Diana Koval said.
Students at Waverly High spend hours on the game to beat their high score and get angry when they don’t do well. After deleting it, they can never get it back unless they are willing to spend thousands or millions on the devices that have it. Although there are many spin- offs of the game, one can get just as addicted if they played them.
