Letter To The Editor: Sheds Light On School Spirit
Addison Schneider
When you watch movies about high schools, you see all different kinds of people. Often times, they're separated into their little areas like flocks of sheep. Nerds and the socially awkward in one area, jocks/populars in the other. But no matter what, it seems that in whatever shape and form, all of them have school spirit.
Imagine, that at every home sporting event, the student section was filled to the top. This is likely only at a high-stake game such as districts or state. It would be incredible if it was always that way, though.
Being an athlete, I understand how encouraging and helpful it is when the pep band is blaring and the students are all jumping and chanting. Expand the overwhelming spirit idea to away games. Now, I don't mean that it has to match home numbers. But, it'd still be cool if at least SOMEONE came.
Nothing about Waverly High School is perfect. But, the experience is entirely up to the student body because "we're all in this together," despite our differences. I don't limit this to sports, either.
I think every activity deserves the support. Things like drama, choir, band, speech, poetry, bowling and so on. The bowling team won state, and it wasn't even a minor earthquake. Think about it, Waverly doesn’t get a ton of championship wins.
What I'm trying to say is that we all don't have to love basketball the way I do, or love theatre the way the drama students do. But, we are Waverly.
Nobody's too cool, or too uncool to show school spirit. In the fall, school spirit was pretty great. But, some of the winter activities lacked very much support. In my opinion, high school would be so much more fun if we made it that way.
Waverly isn't made up of the boosters, teachers, and administration. It's extremely dominated by the student body. And as a student body, we have more impact than we think that we do or than the administration makes it seem like we do on our own experiences.
We have the power to make our high school careers not just good, but great. It's just up to everyone to have enough pride to show school spirit. I promise, it's a ton more fun that way.
