The Waverly Future Farmers of America is sprouting future leaders within their club and reaping the benefits at the recent FFA Districts.

FFA is a competitive club where members compete and improve business and leadership skills through agriculture and interaction.

“The goal of FFA is to do our best in everything we do, ” Advisor Kris Spath said.

Recently, the Waverly squad of future farmers combined their skills and pulled in district titles Jan. 28.

Spath is very proud of her 2013-2014 FFA team and how they roped in their successes this year. “I think everyone did awesome,” Spath said. “They prepared well and were ready for the contest when the time came around them.”

Vice-President Caitlin Davis explained her title as District Champion Senior Public Speaking and how the Junior. Parliamentary Procedure team took their project by the horns to come in first and the Senior Parliamentary team were District Runner-Up.

“Senior Public Speaking is basically an info-persuasive speech,” Davis said. “And Parliamentary Procedure is how to conduct a meeting parliamentarily correct.”

Davis went in depth about state qualifiers and the other district competitors.

“We qualified both of our ‘Parli’ teams; me, one alternate for Junior Public Speaking and the rest of the kids got red and blue ribbons,” Davis elaborated.

FFA President Trevor Spath is part of the six member Senior Parliamentary team with Davis and excited to be on the road to state in the beginning of April.

“We’ve had to prepare for a long time, but I think we have the potential to really do well in April,” Trevor said.

Compared to other years, FFA didn’t take as many competitors. However, for the small team they took, they did exceedingly well, individually and team-wise.

“We did really well and hope to improve during state,” Trevor said.

Kris has different predictions for state, although they aren’t as clear as the farmer’s almanac. “I think our ‘Parli’ teams will do really well,” Spath explained.

“And if our individual speakers keep improving like they have been, then they should do really well, too.”

April is soon approaching, and the Future Farmers are cleaning up the slop to make their presentations grow into the cream of the crop.
