Waverly High School’s auditorium was overrun with cops on Wednesday, Feb. 18, as they held a meeting regarding the criminal, drug and traffic matters. A group of about 50 to 70 troopers, investigators and officers swarmed the high school throughout the school day.

Traffic Officer Lance Rogers claims that the annual meetings is used not only to assess, award and critic police experiences, but also to present a vision for the following year.

“For about two hours, we talk about all of the criminal matters, drug matters, liquor issues, traffic stops, DUIs, training incidents, use of force, pursuits and shootings--everything we’ve done in the past year,” Rogers said. “After a short break, our colonel gives a presentation to all the troopers about a year in review of 2013 and what our vision is for 2014.”

The congregation caused confusion among students as they pulled into the parking lot and noticed State Patrol cars lined up in a row. Yet, the assembly was held in the auditorium last year.

“We came to Waverly last year, but there was no school in session that day, so no students knew we were here and we had the building to ourselves,” Rogers said.

Lincoln is the headquarters troop area as well as the senior command staff area, so it was logical to hold the event near the city.

One of the sergeants has a daughter that attends Waverly High School and presented the team with the idea of using the auditorium.

“[Senior] Megan Salman’s dad is one of the supervisors that works for us, and so he’s came to us saying he has this place in Waverly we can use,” Rogers said.

The group wanted to extend a thank-you to the compliance they received from Waverly’s administration, students and staff. They appreciate the use of the space and hope to return in the upcoming years.
