The Waverly High History Club is set to take it’s annual trip to Hamlow and Eagle Elementary schools on Feb. 27.
This is the fourth year History Club has gone dressed as famous, historical figures to present to the elementary kids how the historical figures lived their lives.
“They did research on figures and gave a three to four minute speech about what their life was like and what they did,” Styskal said.
The elementary and high school’s bond is important in a district. It allows younger the kids to get comfortable with the high schoolers and to see how it will turn out when they move up to high school.
Along with listening to the historical figures for a bit, the elementary students are allowed to ask three to five questions. Speaking to the teenagers makes a kid more comfortable.
“This creates ties between the high school and the elementary schools in the district,” Styskal said.
Speaking in front of crowds is many people’s weakness. They get nervous and choke. Speaking in front of the students will help History Club members gain experience, even though their audience is younger kids. The kids love to hear about influential leaders from someone who isn’t their teacher. This gives them a new learning experience and provides excitement to learn. Younger kids are eager to learn.
As they get older, learning becomes more of a struggle.
“They pay more attention more than the kids my age do,” sophomore Kyle Holton.
Bringing the schools in the district together is a great way to rewrite our history into a better future for everyone.
