Several Waverly High School students have qualified for the Economics State Competition this academic year.
After having flourished in the admittance test, this year’s number of Waverly qualifiers has grown. There was a large group that went out to State last year, but there are three more students that qualified. Sponsor Trent Goldsmith claimed that the success is probably due to the mass number of kids taking the test compared to previous years.
“The difference is that we had more kids take the AP Honors exam and do really well,” Goldsmith said. “We got second and third place.”
Among the qualifiers were seniors Wesley Young, Alex Banketov, Madison Egeberg, Chandler Haist, Peyton Schneider, Jared Story, Jared Viets, Dylan Janecek, Mitchell Moylan, Taggart Hanson, junior Matt Caddy and sophomore Jennifer Russell.
The teams that placed will not only be rewarded cash money for their victory, but also another chance for a win.
“I’m excited for this. I’m excited to do well at State,” senior Mitchel Moylan said. “It’s a really good opportunity and will look really good on my resume for college.”
Janecek qualified for the Econ Challenge at UNL, and was excited to have made it here his senior year.
“We qualified because we took a 30 question test and we got in the top ten in our division,” Janecek said. “We are hoping to win a State Championship now.”
That positive attitude spread throughout the whole group; everyone, even Goldsmith, is extremely optimistic about what is to come.
“I think we are going to take State,” Goldsmith said.
That competition is scheduled for March 28 on the UNL campus. If the students do well, there is a National Semifinal Competition taken at the State Championship team’s school. So if Waverly pulls out a win, that competition will be held in District 145.
Waverly hopes to proctor that exam after winning their title.
