Four students from Waverly High School attended the Capital Forum Day at the state capital on Monday, Mar. 24.
Seniors Peyton Schneider, Jared Viets, Jared Story and Dylan Janecek are the four selected out of 11 Waverly students. The purpose of attending this day is to debate the United States’ role progressing through the 21st century. The group meets every Wednesday morning to talk about what categories they will cover at the event. The topics of immigration, trade, nuclear proliferation and terrorism are ones that the students are educating themselves on.
Students are also given an opportunity to meet state senators and national senators, as well as representatives.
“I want to ask them about their views on current issues, the crisis in Ukraine. I’m curious as to what their outlooks are,” Story said.
Trent Goldsmith introduced this opportunity to his macroeconomics class and discussed it for two weeks. He then introduced the idea of the Capitol Forum and students interested in the event applied.
“Mr. Goldsmith was promoting it to us. He suggested it and we applied to do it, then got accepted,” Janecek said.
At the capitol, a poster is hung up to represent the students’ view on the US role. Three students were selected to help design the poster: juniors Alysha Hunkins and Laurel Preuit and senior Gracie Welling. When the group returns, they will deliver a summary to the class of what they did and how the day went.
