State Economic Results Not As Strong As Hoped

Although there were high hopes from the group heading out to State Economics, none of the Waverly teams made it to the Jeopardy round in order for a shot at State Champs. Senior Madison Egeberg was expecting better results, so third place felt more like a loss than a victory, even up against 120 teams in the state.
“We lost by five points. So that means if we had answered one more question correctly, we would have made it to the Jeopardy round and had the opportunity to be State Champions in our division,” Egeberg said. “So that’s a little depressing.”
Egeberg competed in the David Ricardo Division, first year econ students, with her group members Matt Caddy, seniors Mitch Moylan and Taggart Hanson.
There were two groups admitted into the AP/Honors category: Free da Market and Capitol Forum -1, +1. Free da Market (seniors Alex Banketov, Peyton Schneider, Chandler Haist and Wesley Young) received 5th out of 44 teams, and Capitol Forum (Jared Story, Jared Viets, Jennifer Russell and Dylan Janecek) got 4th.
Regardless of some sad faces, the students did excel, especially the only class B school to make State in the AP/Honors division. Waverly was also the only school that does not offer a full year AP course.
“Overall I think we did very well and I am proud of all the Waverly teams that competed,” Egeberg said.
The majority of members are graduating this year and won’t have an opportunity to redeem themselves, but it was a good fight all the way through the end.
