What Is Special?

Aelyn Thompson

“Everyone is special. Everyone has a purpose and everyone can accomplish anything their heart desires.”

These words ring out from adults everywhere, especially teachers and parents.

These influential beings in teens lives tell how everyone is intelligent and special.

But if everyone is special, how is that special at all?

Everyone is unique; that is a given. I know for sure I couldn’t stand at a free throw line and sink 25 baskets in a row.

Special is when someone comes out of the shadows, changing and influencing everyone and everything they are associated with. Someone who has outstanding talents and exceptional means of impacting people.

People can be special. For example, Pope Francis rose to his position by sticking to what he believed in, even though it contradicts most things his followers believe in and are told by their church. Even though the Pope does many things contradictory, he still has an overwhelming amount of support, from every corner of religion. Mediocrity could not accomplish what he has. Another fantastic example is Martin Luther King Jr. King had a gift of speaking and was a huge reason that America has evolved to the nation it is today.

Both were and are influential beings in our society, and they are special people.

The problem with this society is that there is a lack of distinguishing between the unique, and the truly special.

Embrace uniqueness, but strive for something truly offsetting from the crowd. Reach for the stars that shine as brightly as you could.

You’re not special until you’ve earned it.
