For the first time in the history of Waverly, the slam poetry team is headed to finals with excitement in their hearts and poems on their minds.

After the two past years of getting close, the team is going to the finals to compete against Millard South, Lincoln North Star and one more opponent who will be determined at the today’s match at the Joslyn Art Museum’s Witherspoon Concert Hall. This will decide which of the final teams challenge Waverly on Thursday, April 17.

“I always get nervous for the girls when they get up there,” sponser Kelly Bielenberg said.

In sports it is easier to perform in from of a crowd but to speak from your heart isn’t as easy.

“It’s a big deal to present your own writing in front of a large group of people,” Bielenberg said. This match will be something new for the slam team.

“They have already proven that they are a really talented team,” Bielenberg said.

At 7 p.m., the Slam team rhymed and slammed their poetry on the stage, landing them third in Class A finals.
