In April 24 senior Jared Story was named Outstanding Economics Students, earning an elite position of one out of ten students in the state.
He was awarded at the 25th Annual Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. The reception included a dinner and a ceremony where the certificates were presented. This event was held at the Federal Reserve Building in Omaha.
Teachers from other high schools in the area nominated their students with the best economic knowledge. The teacher who nominated Story was economic teacher Trent Goldsmith. In considering a student, for this prestigious award, Goldsmith had to look at how they deal with the realism of economics.
“I selected Jared because he takes what he has learned and applies it to real-life situations, for instance Obamacare or minimum wage,” Goldsmith said.
Economists want to use emotions as a way to look at a guide economics. But, there will always need to be statistics that back up the emotional feelings; that’s called positive economics.
“Jared does a great job of seeing the positive side of things," Goldsmith said.
Learning how to use positive economics is part of the economic classes at WHS. Story has taken every econ course offered. Last semester he took microeconomics and this semester he is taking macroeconomics. Both classes serve as dual credits through Nebraska Wesleyan.
Taking classes and involving oneself in economic- based clubs, is time consuming and takes a hard worker. There are challenges students can participate in and receive awards from the state of Nebraska. Story believes this award is very important for economic students.
“Econ students don’t get enough credit for what they do,” Story said
Having ceremonies such as the one Story went to is a perfect way to recognize what students do and their achievements their teachers can nominate them for.
Receiving awards can help with college scholarships and future jobs. It is a benchmark in a high schooler's life when they are given something that gives him or her pride.
