Ceiling tiles are not something most students go to school looking forward to. The typical ceiling tile is actually very boring; white, made of cardboard-like material and plain. With a few paint brushes and different colors, designs and ideas, these simple tiles come to life.
In the past year, Waverly High School students have taken the opportunity to put their art on the ceilings.
These designed ceiling tiles are probably the best way for individual students to display their art for the whole school to see. Each tile represents a different personality. Expressing yourself in high school can be the hardest thing to do as a teenager. Many teenagers express themselves through paintings, drawings and sketches. These tiles give each student a way to show the school their talents.
Now that high school is finishing up, many seniors are making their mark before they head off to college. Seniors take a tile and create their art, then paint their name and graduating year so that when they walk out of the WHS doors for the last time, their name will be remembered by their art that they created.
Having something tangible to be proud of is a really great feeling. Students have been putting full effort into making their tile extravagant. These tiles are one of the best ways for students to feel good about themselves in school in another way than having good grades. Having a 4.0 GPA is great and all, but expressing yourself with your talents outside of homework is even better. I’d take feeling good about what I’ve created than getting a 100% on a test anyday.
Decorating a ceiling tile doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I believe that these tiles are a sufficient way to make students proud of their work. These pieces of art are far more than just a square in the ceiling.
