Senior Emily Clarke is the definition of determined and dedicated. She has devoted most of her life to school and activities, which is why she is one of the top students in her class. Not many can achieve what Emily has gone above and beyond for. It is an understatement to say she has done a lot for herself and the community.

Since Emily was five, one of her biggest influences was music, which only fueled her involvement in the band program, another one of her many accomplishes.

To be a part of band is like being a part of a family.

“Music has taught me confidence, dedication and pride in my individuality,” Clarke said. “This foundation will be difficult to replace as I transfer to college.”

A few of her musical achievements include NMEA All-State band, Varsity Jazz band, UNL Winter festival of Winds and Percussion and she won a UNL Young Artist Award.

Clarke is also an active member and leader of the German Club and the school’s National Honor Society.

“These two organizations have encouraged me to serve my community and strengthen my leadership skills,” Clarke said.

Even though she is graduating this year and has to say goodbye to her family at the high school, her skills and admiration will continue to carry her through college. She plans to attend Iowa State University to major in apparel, merchandising and design, with a minor in music.

She wants to have a career as a costume designer in a theatrical troupe or organization.

“I have long recognized and pursued my love for sewing, music, the arts and history,” Clarke said. “Intending to parlay these passions into the study of authentic historical fashion and period specific dress.”

With an interest in studying abroad that includes a field study trip and an internship, Clarke has a dream to once again travel overseas in the near future. Having gone to Italy, Turkey and Greece last summer, it will only make it more beneficial for her to take an opportunity to expand her social skills and make connections with her studies.

Clarke has not only shown that anyone can achieve a goal if he or she works hard, she has also shown the importance of taking a role in the community. Through her clubs and activities, she has been an inspiration not only to students but to the town of Waverly.

It just goes to show that if there is a goal out there that someone wants, it can be achieved. And if someone has a dream, that they need to follow it till they know they’ve reached it.

The first step to that is to have an attitude like Emily. Take pride in what you do, dedicate yourself and overall be inspiring.
