Five boys from the junior class of Waverly High School raced to the finish line on September 14 at the fourth annual donut dash held at the UNL East Campus loop.

Andy Miesbach, Derek Trausch, Jacob Schneider, Kyle Holton and Owen Gubbels ran two kilometers, attempted to eat 12 donuts, then ran another two kilometers.

The event raises funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). CASA is a network of over 900 community-based programs that train volunteers to watch out for the best interest of neglected and abused children. The volunteers offer information to the judges and ensure that each child is attended to properly while in foster care.

The boys were thankful the event supported a good cause, because they were quite disgusted with the donut eating.

“I only ate seven donuts and it was terrible, but it was all for a good cause,” Holton said.

While one would think that large amounts of donuts would be some teenagers’ dream, food doesn’t mix well with jogging.

“Eating the donuts, you start out strong, and then you hit a wall,” Gubbels said.

Their group also attempted to organize a costume/theme to dress up as.

“The outfits started out as an ‘80s workout theme, which turned into a Joe Dirt/redneck/semi-pro/jean shorts with wigs,” Miesbach said.

The team fought through the race, each clad in interesting colors and miscellaneous wigs as well as headbands and short-shorts.

Schneider stole second place, Miesbach followed closely in third, then came Trausch, Holton and Gubbels.

Taking places second through sixth, they accomplished what they most wanted to achieve.

“We knew we had to conquer the donuts,” Miesbach joked. “We plan on going back next year, hopefully with a bigger team.”

The donuts didn’t dash their hopes of coming together as friends for a good cause. They may have ran out of steam at the last kilometer, but they didn’t run out of heart.
