Twitter Thoughts

High school is a struggle.

Dating world sucks.

School lunches are anything but appetizing.

Teachers seem to think their particular class is the only one a student has, creating an unnecessary load of homework.

However, our generation gets to deal with an added problem: social media. Unfortunately, a large portion of teens choose to use this social media negatively.

In the past year, about three to four Twitter and Instagram accounts have been made by Waverly High School students with the intent to attack or put down other students. Of course, this fits under the category of cyber-bullying. What’s worse is the fact that it is anonymous bullying.

The most recent account was one under the handle “@WaverlyBurnBook”. While it was taken down after just a few days, it was up long enough to post tweets including things like “Has anyone seen [name] not flirting with a guy?”, “Is [name] a pilot ‘cause her forehead is a landing strip”, “soooo is [name] trying to grow dreads or nah #nasty”.

High school shouldn’t have to include even more complications than the ones everybody already deals with. A student shouldn’t have to go to school every day and feel any sort of betrayal or threat. Rude comments about a person - especially delivered in a cowardly manner - are far from necessary.

Whether it’s an act of boredom, a desire for vengeance, or because it’s “just a joke”, it’s not right. If someone is going to try and hurt somebody’s feelings, at the very least they should have the decency to do it as themselves, and not some anonymous account behind a fake screen name.
