On Thursday, Sept. 11 the Waverly Cross Country team dashed their way through Pioneers Park at a Pius X HS invite. Wet and muddy weather brought out nearly average performance in the cross country participants.
Being the only medalist and placing 28th in the race with a time of 00:18:34, senior Phillip Faughn is a perfect example of what it takes to stay strong and proud.
Though it was a bit slippery out, a little rain didn’t stop the Vikings from pushing it to the limit.
"I feel accomplished when I place," Faughn said. "All of my hard work is payed off."
The adrenaline racing through the runners’ veins and the anticipation on the starting line added on to the hype of the meet.
The support of the coaches and parents on the sideline always keeps the runners going and adds positivety to the meet.
"I was excited and nervous at the same time," junior Karoline Finken said. "Coach Cole
always tells us to run with our mind at the beginning, then our legs to help us pass people and then our heart at the end, and that always keeps me going."
Even when cross country meets are upbeat and festive, sometimes things don’t go right for the team.
The Waverly cross country teammates definitely know how to finish strong, even when things got rough.
Come hell and high water, they stuck together as a team and got the job done. With blood, sweat, tears and maybe even a little puke here and there, Waverly showed what it meant to have such determination and commitment.
The Vikings plan to take on another meet today at the Crete invitational.
