A Flowering Musical
The drama department decided to go green by recycling a production for the annual musical with the off-Broadway show “Little Shop of Horrors.”
This curtain-raiser will also have sentimental value to the directors. This was the production that husband and wife team Patrick Lambrecht and Rachel Kornfeld produced at Waverly.
“Its about a guy on skid row, which is pretty much the poorest of the poor. He works in a flower shop where the owner took him in as an orphan and he works in order to live. He’s looking all his life for a lucky break and he finally gets that break finding a plant on a strange lunar eclipse. It brings success but at high price of blood,” senior Dillon Kell said.
The show has a lot of technical singing and choreography. At one point in the show multiple actors will be singing, answering phones and eventually get tied up.
“You have to practice every day. You have to practice all out because we don't have that much time,” senior Tucker Flodman said
The drama department has a normal time period of approximately two and a half months to rehearse for the show. This time has been chomped to about a month and two weeks for this production.
“The fall performances do not have a lot of time for rehearsal as the show needs to be completed before the start of marching band competitions. This forced us to hold auditions prior to school starting and having a couple of weeks less rehearsal time than usual,” director Patrick Lambrecht said.
This musical is a definite departure from past productions.
“It’s not as traditional as our usual shows. Its music that you would listen to in the car” Flodman said.
With this recycled show, it will be a start for the drama department.
