“Little Shop of Horrors” was anything but horrific, killing the audience and myself with laughter. With wordplay and tunes that rang through the auditorium long after the notes were sung, “Little Shop” left smiles on faces hours after closing time.

On Skid Row in the 1950s, Seymore Krelborn (senior Tucker Flodman) slaves at Mushnik Skid Row Florist under the extremely watchful eye of Mr. Mushnik (senior Dillon Kell). His co-worker, Audrey (senior Shelby Baur), is a bit battered and bruised by a low-life boyfriend, but Krelborn still thinks she’s prettier than all the flowers at the shop. Mr. Mushnik was one customer away from closing shop on Skid Row, but when Seymore made a startling new discovery, he might get everything he ever dreamed of. But it comes at a price steeper than roses.

Breakout performers Dillon Kell (Mr. Mushnik), Tanner Lemrick (Dr. Oran Scrivello) and Hailey Dunn (Crystal - Trio) really added a spark to the usual musical casts at Waverly.

This weekend is Kell’s debut on the musical scene, bringing something new to the plate in his lead role.

“I’m really scared but excited to have a new opportunity and challenge,” Kell said about this weekend.

This dark comedy is a refreshing twist to the drama department at Waverly, and the cast loves this new feel in the auditorium.

“This is my favorite production I’ve ever done,” Flodman and senior Ryan Searle, who voices plant, agreed. “Comedies are so much harder because the audience is so involved, but they’re so much more fun.”

You can catch “Little Shop of Horrors” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.; purchase tickets at the door for $5. You have to come see this horrifyingly great production, Audrey II doesn’t disappoint.
