A member of varsity band, senior Maggie Geiler, was accepted into the national Army Band in August, an honor awarded to the most talented high school seniors and a few rare juniors across the country.

Geiler underwent a months-long process to audition, including videos of marching, soloing and an interview. Her application took two months to process before she found out she had been accepted.

“I found out in early August, but I couldn’t tell anybody,” Geiler said. “It was hard. I would obviously want to tell people because it’s such a big deal.”

Though keeping her secret wasn’t easy, it had its perks.

“It actually let me soak it in a bit more before everybody else knew, so that was nice,” Geiler said.

The news finally came out on Oct. 20 to an assembly of the entire student body.

“When the day came I walked into the auditorium and was just overwhelmed because it was so much bigger and I had no idea that the student body was going to be there,” Geiler said. “It was thrilling and I can't remember half the things that they said because it just went by so fast.”

Band director Brady Rohlfs shared her excitement, and a whole lot of pride to boot.

“I think it’s just amazing, and I’m very proud of her,” Rohlfs said. “It’s such an honor to have them select one of our students. There’s been nobody from Nebraska in the last two years to make it in.”

Army Band members will get a week to practice their music. Following the weeklong rehearsal, the band will play at the Alamodome in San Antonio over Christmas break.
