The World Series. It’s something that all Major League Baseball players hope to be a part of. They strive for the roaring crowd, the high intensity of each pitch and the feeling of conquering the biggest challenge they will face as a player: becoming world champions.
The Kansas City Royals are able to play for that title this year.
29 years ago, the Royals took the World Series throne. With an 11-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals back in 1985, the bar was set high for upcoming teams in later years.
With a wild card win sending them in high hopes to the playoffs, the Royals became division champions this month.
The World Series is held at Kauffman Stadium and AT&T Field this year. The Series matchup is between Kansas City and San Francisco.
Game 1 didn’t end in the Royals’ favor, losing to the Giants 7-1.
Game 2, played Oct. 22, was a different story.
Going into the 6th inning, the Royals were tied with the Giants 2-2. When the Giants walked off the field, the scoreboard read 5 more runs for the Royals. This big inning of hits and smart base running gave the Royals a huge win in game 2.
This caused an uproar of excitement and anticipation around Waverly.
“I was screaming at the TV and was proud that the Royals were able to get it together from their last game,” sophomore Britni Kucera said. “Perez’s two-run double got the crowd on their feet. Infantes’ two-run homer was pretty exciting.”
With game 3 coming up, the desire for a win is evident in plenty of Royals’ fans.
“I think they’ll win it in 7,” sophomore Josh Dauel said. “I think the Giants are the better team ability wise, but the Royals have more heart and they can overcome a lot more than everyone thinks they can.”
During the the sixth of inning of game 2, Giant’s pitcher Hunter Strickland became angry once the Royals’ started scoring their 5 runs. He began yelling at Perez after Infante hit his two-run home run.
Strickland’s actions caused a stir of emotions during the game.
“It was amusing to watch Strickland be a baby on the mound and unable to control his emotions by calling out Perez,” Kucera said.
During a conference meeting, the Royals players spoke about that without their fans, they wouldn’t be in the World Series.
Support from everyone helps keep the team pumped and ready to go.
“I feel confident that they will win,” senior Marissa Easton said.
Unfortunately, the Royals’ have lost their winning streak.
Kansas City fell to San Francisco in an 11-4 loss on Saturday. They lost once again Sunday in a 5-0 game.
Fans are hoping for a new game plan to come from the Royals in their upcoming game.
“I feel like they could’ve done better hitting and pitching wise. I thought the defense was pretty solid overall,” sophomore Jade Alexander said.
The Royals take on the Giants once again for game 5 on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Local Royals fans are looking for Kansas City to show up with their game faces on to tie the series at 3-3.
