Waverly’s varsity volleyball squad beat Nebraska City and the Platteview Trojans at Platteview for districts on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Their performance was a bit of a rollercoaster, but the Vikes were able to pull together and clinch the victories.

“We started stronger than we normally do, then got ahead of ourselves - but we ended strong and kept each other on track,” senior Abby Curtis said.

Head coach Terri Neujahr knew the matches would be tough, but was pleased with her team’s performance by the end.

“It’s always thrilling to win your district. I knew both teams would come out and be very prepared for us, but we made some nice adjustments along the way,” Neujahr said.

Not all of the heavy lifting was done at districts; the volleyball girls had to put in their best effort for the whole season to find themselves at the top.

“We did good [sic] and showed that we worked hard this season,” sophomore Emily Clarke said.

For senior Ashley Neujahr, the possibility of districts being her final game playing for the Vikings was daunting.

“I was so emotional about the match. It could’ve been the last match I ever played with this team,” Neujahr said. “We got more comfortable and relaxed as a team, and it kept going up throughout the night.”

The next challenge for Viking volleyball to surmount is the Skutt Skyhawks (who have always put Waverly to the test in any sport) on Saturday at 1:00 at Skutt Catholic High School. The victor of that match opens their door to state.

“Skutt is really good, but I think we have an opportunity that we can take to beat them if we work really hard in the next few practices. It’s going to take a lot of work, but I think we can win,” Ashley Neujahr said.
