Wars For A Good Cause

Waverly Student Council started their annual penny war on Dec. 1 for another good cause to -- benefit a WHS student.
This year, the donations were chosen to be donated to teen Mckenna Smith who was diagnosed with Juvenile Huntington's Disease in her late childhood.
The wars have been around for as long as student council members can remember and it’s one of the many fundraisers the committee uses to give back.
"It's a tradition, and it's good that we donate to someone in the community," student council president Jack Kasra said.
The Penny Wars are a tradition WHS has had for at least the last decade to give back to a local need and make a big difference with something as little as spare change. For most fundraisers you don’t get to see the change you’ve made but with this concept students will get to see just how much they impacted someone else and actually get to see the change they’ve made.
"They can see that they are making a difference in someone directly involved,” student council sponsor Jason Boitnott said. “It’s a great way to give back to the community.”
Smith is a good candidate for the fundings not only to relieve her medical bills, but because she is a special girl and many think she is very deserving of it.
“She’s someone that I had in so many of my elementary school classes, and she put a smile on so many people’s face,” student council member Hunter Radenslaben said.
Student council members in charge of the wars are very motivated to see how much they can raise this week and determined to get the money into the thousands.
“It'd really be an awesome feeling to exceed our goal and hand her and her family one thousand dollars," Radenslaben said.
As the students begin to count the change, they hope they will be making an even bigger one and put a smile Smith's face as she did to theirs.
