The wrestling team competed against Syracuse at Waverly High School on Thursday, Dec. 4.
Junior Brayden Dowding came out on top, showing high intensity and the will to win.
“There was a lot of energy,” Dowding said. “It felt good after not wrestling for a whole season.”
Although the other wrestlers didn’t win, they all put in a tremendous effort.
“We had our eyes opened after the first dual. We gave it our best but we realized that we need to work harder every day and make a change,” senior Trevor Spath said.
After the losses during the first meet, the boys decided that failure was not an option for future meets.
“I personally realized that I don’t want to lose close matches anymore,” Spath said. “I’m going to work harder than ever for it and if I do that, in the end I shouldn’t regret anything as long as I give a 100 percent effort every day.”
The wrestlers took on Pius on Saturday, Dec. 6, showing some improvement. Dowding and junior Justin Hennessey pulled out the win after a long day of competition.
The boys are setting goals for themselves now that the season is in full swing.
“I’m looking forward to new competition and to districts and how far I will make it,” Dowding said.
Some goals are setting the bar high, making practices intense and pushing everyone to be better than the day before.
Those range from winning at the next meet to state a few months from now.
“I want to medal at the state tournament,” Spath said.
Even though state is a long ways down the road and they have a lot of work to do to reach it, the wrestlers are optimistic about the near future.
