"Meninism" Pokes Fun At A Very Important Cause
Twitter can be good in some cases. You can get breaking news or see that nice picture of you and a friend.
Twitter isn’t always kittens and rainbows, in fact, Twitter can be a breeding ground for hate and bias. Exhibit A is “meninism”.
Let’s start out with the basics. Meninism is a term that can be used in two ways. The first way it could be used is by men who feel they have been wronged by feminism, the fight for equal treatment of women. The second way it could be used is by men who join in with feminism and fight for its cause.
Unfortunately, the first definition is the one that’s spreading like wildfire on Twitter.
When you bring demographics into the mix, white, straight males are the only group with all human rights. Whether you look at marriage equality, pay rates or just plain respect, the aforementioned group has the most amount of privilege. But feminism isn’t targeting those rights. Feminism is fighting to make the world a better and more safe place to live for women. We aren’t targeting men and saying they need to make less money and they need to have their rights taken away, we’re fighting to have the same rights and be treated as an equal among men.
Feminism is needed in this day and age as much as it was needed in the 1950s. The same “gender roles” that were imposed on women then are still an active part of defining stereotypes. The belief that women should cook, clean and watch the kids while the man works is, in my opinion, a very outdated and sexist one.
So, instead of poking fun at and shooting down feminist beliefs, men and women alike should join together in the fight for feminism and equal treatment of all the sexes.
