The Problem With Free Education
President Obama has just released his plan for the American people to pay for two years of junior college for all students who wish to receive post secondary education. This plan is ridiculous and not at all conventional. It will create more problems than it would solve.
While Federal funding will pay for over half of this plan, Obama expects states to pick up the rest of this expensive bill. The states would have to pay for their part through taxes.
Taxes that would be used for Obama’s new plan would be better spent toward lowering the national $18 trillion national debt. The government should be coming up with plans to lower that enormous number as the highest priority. Not to mention that the United States owes various countries large sums of money. Eventually, those countries will want to call on their money and the United States won’t be able to pay them back when it is swimming in debt.
Also, the United States is the most militarily strong countries. If a war breaks out, there would not be very much money to protect ourselves if we are already spending millions of dollars on citizen’s college education.
There are already numerous ways that you can receive a reduced tuition college education. Students can get funding for when they attend college through FASFA, which is federally funded. Scholarships are another opportunity to receive money to go towards a college tuition. Federal loans can be given out to those looking to attend college and meet certain income requirements. And many students are able to maintain a job while they attend college.
There is a lot wrong with Obama’s plan, but the idea of the opportunity to attend a junior college would help those struggling to find sufficient work. His plan should be scrapped, and as a substitute more scholarships should be given out. Also, there should be an increase in the federal loans given out, but also a stricter minimum GPA for those that receive federal funds. That way those students who are serious about extending their education and work hard enough for a fairly good GPA can receive help, but will still have to come up with some of the money themselves.
Congress will make their decision based on what they think is best for the American people. The American people need to make their opinion about this new plan clear. It’s the duty of the American people to voice their thoughts on this topic.
