Spanish Club held their first movie night and potluck at Waverly High School on Jan. 22 with a successful turnout.
The advisors and members hung up signs and posters, inviting all students to join. Many members and non-members showed throughout the night with more than enough food in hand.
“It turned out really well, we actually had a lot of people show up,” senior Brooke Ochsner said.
The club, regardless of the title, doesn’t center around its members speaking Spanish.
“Most of our events don’t actually involve speaking in Spanish, they’re more about culture,” advisor Melissa Hopkins said.
This wasn’t a first for the Spanish club incorporating food into a gathering.
“In the past, we had a cooking night and made Spanish food in the FCS room, but the rules changed so we couldn’t actually make it,” Ochsner said. “We’ve been trying to figure out something that involves Spanish food, and this was a collaborative idea.”
The group wants to bring in more students and plans events like this one to reach out to others.
“We’re trying to recruit more people to be in Spanish club, so this event was open to anybody,” Hopkins said. “We like to do events where people don’t need to stress out, events for people to relax and just get their minds away from school for a bit.”
Anyone interested in joining the club must visit with Ms. Hopkins or Mrs. Shoemaker. The club will begin fundraising for their trip to Spain, which they’ll take over the upcoming summer.
