Fall Out Boy's New Album Fails To Impress

After a four-year hiatus from 2009 to 2013, Fall Out Boy, consisted of Patrick Stump on vocals, Pete Wentz on bass, Joe Trohman on guitar and Andy Hurley on drums, is back and better than ever. “American Beauty/American Psycho” is the title of the band’s new album.

It couldn’t be more fitting. The album shows the pop-punk and the pop side of the popular band.

Opening with the song “Irresistible”, the album right away conveys the idea of a heart-broken boy singing about a relationship of the past. With lyrics like “I love the way you hurt me, it’s irresistible,” it’s clear this is one lovesick boy.

After the titular song “American Beauty/American Psycho” comes the widely used song “Centuries”. Even if the name doesn’t sound familiar, you’ve definitely heard this song used in advertisements for College Game Day on ESPN. The popular sports channel even apologized for overplaying the song. If you need a song that makes you feel unstoppable, this song is just what you’ve been looking for.

Following “The Kids Aren’t Alright”, a slow rock song, comes my favorite song “Uma Thurman”. This song is an ode to the actress in her role of Mrs. Mia Wallace in the cult-favorite movie, “Pulp Fiction”. In a creative twist, after Stump sings “She wanna dance like Uma Thurman,” a spin on the music from the dance scene between Thurman and John Travolta in “Pulp Fiction” plays.

After the first half of the album, however, the music starts to get kind of hum-drum.

Four of the songs, “Jet Pack Blues”, “Fourth of July”, “Immortals” and “Twin Skeletons” can be likened to a massacre of the ears. They’re nothing special and they aren’t pleasant songs to listen to.

However, I do enjoy the other two songs “Favorite Record” and “Novocaine”. They’re not songs that would blow you away, they’re more like songs that you wouldn’t mind listening to when doing homework or surfing the internet.

Even though this album is pretty spectacular, it doesn’t beat the band’s previous album “Save Rock and Roll”. The latter featured Elton John, Courtney Love, Big Sean and Foxes. Also, the music videos made up a 50 minute movie with countless other cameos from celebrities like 2 Chainz and Tommy Lee.

Don’t get me wrong, “American Beauty/American Psycho” is a great release, but, if you’re looking for a Fall Out Boy recent release that you’d never get tired of, listen to “Save Rock and Roll”.
