The Hidden Truth Behind Campus Rape
Sheridan Parker- Staff Writer
Rape will forever be a topic that is pushed under the rug. It’s uncomfortable to talk about and inevitably leads to arguments, like what is and what is not considered rape.
Everyone has a different opinion on the topic and with the sexual assaults rising, the conversation is becoming more heated.
Sexual assaults dealing with teens are being featured more in the news lately. Especially those cases that include variables such as alcohol and drugs.
It can be difficult to talk about these situations, but the truth is that one in four college women have reported they were attemptedly raped or were indeed raped, according to oneinfourusa.com, a website dedicated to informing women and men on how real the threat of rape is. These statistics are bone-chilling to women who attend college. It makes the danger very real.
Recently, a television show on ABC, “Switched at Birth”, brought light to the topic and addressed something very difficult too.
The show portrayed a girl waking up in bed with her ex-boyfriend after a night of partying. She is unclear on whether or not they slept together when she first wakes up. As the episode progresses the case is still not determined if it is rape or not.
This poses a question for not only the character, but many women on college campuses. Can you give consent if you are impaired due to alcohol or drugs.
A choice to report rape and get help is a question many people have to answer, but only those who are victims can make the final decision.
