Small Spaces Big Memories
With prom season now behind us, many of the Waverly High School students are reminiscing on the memories they made at their last prom and for some, their first.
With the stress subsiding, too, many of the prom-goers are deep-down glad prom is over as well.
"Prom was a blast,” senior Grant McGill said. “I’m glad I got to enjoy my senior prom with my best friends.”
Most of the graduating class will forever cherish the memories they made at prom with their senior year coming to a close.
“It was an amazing experience with all my friends,” Kody Cooper said.
The pre-prom preparation is what the girls anticipate the most. Getting ready, dinner and pictures are only a few of the crucial things the girls put so much thought into until the day actually arrives. This year, however, many girls put their own twist on pre-prom and started new traditions that were very unusual but so fun.
“My group wanted to try something unique, so we went to Mellow Mushroom, an art-filled pizza place,” junior Taylor Marks said. “Going to the Haymarket wasn’t typical, and we had so much fun doing it.”
Going out wasn’t the only option for prom-goers, some chose to stay at home and save money with friends.
“My group had dinner at a friend’s house instead of going out,” junior Molly Monson said. “It was so relaxed and an easy way to cut down the bill we already spend on prom.”
Along with dinner, many of the boys secured a four-wheeled beauty to cart around their beautiful dates.
“I drove an ‘07 Corvette, and it was really fun to drive,” senior Tucker Flodman said. “The best part of it was the license plate read ‘BOSSLDY’, so I felt pretty boss, lady.”
Some drove little fancy sports cars during the same time some of their friends were enjoying being one of biggest vehicle on the roads.
“My group rented a party bus,” junior Sam Merklein said. “It was a good way to start the party early.”
The theme for prom was chosen by the junior-class council and many were fond of the summery theme, “Under The Sea”, while some were not.
“I thought the theme was a fun idea,” senior Alyssa Weber said. “Although some decorations didn’t exactly match, I think everyone enjoyed it.”
Even though some thought the theme was different, select students thought it fit very well with the venue.
“The theme looked great at The Falls, it just needed some more variety with the decorations,” Marks said.
The venue was also something prom-goers thought could’ve been chosen more cautiously with students wishes in mind. After all, it is their prom.
“The venue was very small and made the dance floor crowded,” Monson said. “More room would’ve made it easier to dance.”
Even with the smaller spaces, many made even bigger memories and won’t even remember the packed venue.
Following the dance, many students attended post prom to win prizes, play games and make even more unforgettable memories with their friends.
Post prom had many thrilling activities, from a mechanical bull, photo booth to sports tournaments that most students enjoyed until boredom set in.
“Post prom was a lot of fun because of our awesome volleyball team,” McGill said. “We kicked butt.”
For the people in the tournaments, the night was lively, but for the ones that weren’t, more activities would have been appreciated.
“The mechanical bull was a big hit,” junior Amanda Ochsner said. “Although I think that there could have been more things to do.”
Many students attend post prom for the attractive prizes like Smart TVs, gifts cards and the tournament titles of course. Although the prizes were intriguing, many students would have rather received high dollar gift cards rather than a stab at a new electronic gadget.
“I didn’t like the idea to have big prizes,” senior Bailey Schuelke said. “I’d rather been guaranteed a $50 gift card than a chance at a TV.”
Although prom has come and gone, many will never forget the memorable aspects of prom, big and little. Despite the advantages and faults, many will never forget the memories they shared with their life-long friends.
“Prom was super fun even though it had its different downfalls,” Schuelke said. “It’s perks made up for that and I’ll never forget spending my last prom with my three best friends.”
