Vikings Fall Short For Homecoming Game
The Waverly Vikings had a devastating Homecoming defeat against the Norris Titans last Friday after a hard-fought game.
After coming back from a 16-point deficit, the Vikings came roaring back with 13 unanswered points by Greyson Skrobecki and Ben Warner, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to topple the Titans.
"I just wanted to give it my all to try and help out our team and just reduce the score since we were down at that time," Skrobecki said.
Despite the loss, the coaches and players found satisfaction in their play.
“They played well. They played really hard. They did everything I could’ve asked them to do. The only thing that didn’t happen was we just didn’t win the game,” head coach Tim Williams said.
The players felt that attitude and effort given during the game were big assets.
“Honestly, it all came down to focus. There were some turnovers, dropped passes and it all just came down to our minds,” senior Justin Lawrence said.
There were also issues on the defensive side of the ball.
“A lot of us just weren’t making our reads and weren’t doing what we were supposed to. We fixed that this week though,” defensive end Justin Hennessey said.
Despite starting the game out in a hole, giving up was not an option for the Waverly players.
“If we stayed together and kept our heads up we would have pushed through,” wide receiver Isaiah Brown said.
The Waverly fans took the last few seconds at Viking Stadium very seriously; the fans and student section erupted during the last few possessions.
“In our last possessions we had so much momentum; I was getting carries up the middle and I was so confident that we were going to get down and score and when we didn’t, I was crushed,” Lawrence said.
The Vikings lost 16-13 but will carry themselves onward to Bennington field next Thursday at 7 o’clock.
